Ready to Become a Mystery Shopper? Here’s What You Need

Becoming a Mystery Shopper doesn’t require a specific degree, but there are essential skills and basic requirements you should have. Here’s everything you need to get started on your Mystery Shopper journey!

1. Have a keen eye for detail and strong observational skills

  • You need a keen eye for detail to notice small but important aspects, such as staff attitude, waiting times, cleanliness, and more.

2. Follow instructions

  • Each Mystery Shopping assignment comes with specific scripts and guidelines that must be followed to the letter, making the ability to follow precise instructions essential.

3. Excellent memory skills to accurately recall details and observations.

  • During an evaluation, you often won’t be able to take notes in real time, so a strong memory is key to accurately recall all the details needed for the report.

4. Writing and communication skills

  • After each assignment, you will need to write a clear and objective report with your observations. It is important to be able to communicate your findings accurately and concisely.

5. Punctuality and responsibility

  • You must be able to complete evaluations within the set deadlines and carry out visits on the specified dates and times.

6. Discretion

  • Confidentiality is essential. As a mystery shopper, your identity should always remain undisclosed, and your behavior should appear completely natural during each visit.

7. Internet Access

  • Most Mystery Shopping tasks are managed through online platforms, so having internet access is essential to review assignments and submit reports.

8. Transportation

  • Depending on the location of the evaluations, you may need your own means of transportation to travel to stores or restaurants.

9. Minimum Age

  • Some companies may set a minimum age requirement, typically 18, to participate in mystery shopping assignments.

10. Schedule Flexibility

  • Since most assignments occur during regular business hours, having availability during these times makes it easier to complete tasks successfully.

11. Experience Not Always Required

  • Many assignments don’t require previous experience. That said, those with a background in customer service or sales may have an edge for more challenging tasks.

The path to success is always under construction.
